Hub or Lug centric?
Beacuse a wheel is lugcentric doesn't mean that it must be balanced lugcentricly.
if your tires don't give you a noticeable shimmy and they are wearing normal, I wouldn't worry about it.
basically,
if it is hubcentric then the wheel is centered immediately upon snugging it up against the hub of the vehicle, the lug nuts have nothing to do w/ centering the wheel - they just hold it on
lugcentric, the wheel is not centered when put on the vehicle, The wheel is only centeredwhen the lug nuts (tapered) are tightened down into the lugcentric wheel's holes at which time the wheel is centered.
as I understand it, the vehicle's hubs can dictate which wheel is correct - lugcentric or hubcentric - based on how the hubs are manufactured. It also dictates what type of lugnuts you use.
I had guessed that my 68 is lugcentric given that the wheels on it have a lot of play until i put the lugnuts on - but these are nonfactory aluminum rims that were probably put on about 15-20 years ago so I wasnt sure if classic mustangs are lug or hub centric. These wheels I have need to have a few lugnuts installed and then I have to move the wheel out to fit it around the lugnuts before tightening it down - once 2-3 lugnuts have been centered and snugged down, the empty lug bolts line up in the remaining holes
ie: my jeep grand cherokee is hubcentric - so just b/c i find the right wheel and backspacing doesnt mean the wheel will work, it has to be machined to be hubcentric rather than using a lugcentric wheel that would want to center on the jeep's lugs, whereas the jeep needs the wheel to center on the hubs....

Not true, just because it is hubcentric from the factory doesn't mean you can't put lugcentric wheels on it. Most all after market wheels are lugcentric. Your mustang has lugcentric wheels on it and it was hubcentic from the factory (if it came with regular steel wheels and hubcaps).
