Default Vent Window Seal

I just recently put new seals in my vent windows. Easy to replace, but neither of them seal the window very well. I can see a little daylight through places between the window and the seal and get some wind noise. Is that just the way these things were or is there something I'm probably doing wrong or is there some kind of adjustment?

Thanks,

The repro rubber seals don't exactly fit as they should. When I did mine, I used a lot of sealant between the rubber and the window molding. I know it is PITA, buy in order to enjoy being able to talk to folks in your car while tooling down the road, I would take them back out and really pour the sealant to it.

I'm talking about the rubber seal that goes inside the vent window frame. It's supposed to seal the triangular window when it swings closed.

Those are a PITA. I just replaced the whole frame of 2 perfectly functioning vent windows with repopped frames and rubber. I haven't had the car on the highway yet but I have a feeling I will be readdressing these buggers in the future. Although they are very shiny...I kinda wish I had left good enough alone on those.

Not sure why you did that. My theory is "if it ain't broke, don't fix it." Yeah, it's the rubber seal that dries out and cracks then starts leaking air and you get the whistle inside the car. The reproduction rubber seals don't seem to fit snugly enough to seal off the air so you have to use sealant. I used that black Permatex stuff and it worked great. It also clean up with some gas on a rag if you get it squeezing out.

I did it because there was some pitting in the chrome on my old ones. The kind of thing you don't really notice until most everything else on the car is redone. It is hard to make the call where to stop and I probably should have made it before messing with those monsters, but they will be fine. I have had pretty good luck with repopped bumpers, emblems, rubber, and interior stuff, but getting the old windows to swing and seal correctly in the new frames has been a challenge.

I understand. I worked on the passenger side vent window for the better part of a week before I could get that sucker to quit whistling. Nothing is more irritating to me than a whistling window. These old dinosaurs were not designed very well in the first place, so we have to figure out a way to re-design the window seal so they actually work.

I found there are two repro seals out there: Ford tooling and junk stuff. I returned junk stuff after comparing it to what came off the car. The Ford tooling seal looks and feels superior to the junk stuff. It even has a Ford part # on the bottom. I have yet to drive down the street with it so I can't comment on the sealing properties.
