Default 200ci engine problems

I am having a problem...again. I feel like over the past 3 weeks, everything I did was pointless. Problem was, when I bought it, it kept dying in idle when I'd pull to a red light or stop sign. I put in a new electronic ignition, and a new gas tank it, plus fuel filter, air filter, and it's full of new gas and oil.

I drove for a few miles and it drove fine. Didn't die in idle, and drove great. After a few miles though, it started "hiccupping" at red lights while in idle. Then, as I drove a couple more miles, it got worse. Eventually, I pulled up to a stop sign, and it died.

I thought it might be the idle screw, so I sped it up a little, but it still kept dying or almost dying on the way home.

I am lost. What could it be? I hope to do a carb rebuild this saturday, so maybe that will help. I FINALLY have it legal to drive and insurance, but, lol, I can't drive it [:@]

Thanks

Do a general tune-up on it, New plugs and wires, timing, distributor cap, points and condenser, etc. I wish I could come through this monitor and help you.

haha, well you don't live too far from me, if I remember correctly

I did new plugs and wires, took out the points and condenser and went to electric. I don't think I need to change out the distributor cap, cause it looks like it's in really good shape. Timing, well I may need to do that.

Where about in TX do you live Soaring?

Oh, and I forgot to mention one thing. When I pull up to a stop and it doesn't die (but gets close), I hit the gas to go, and it "stalls" for a second, then goes strong. I don't know if stalls is the right word, but it is like it's a really slow start, then it just tears out like a V8

Did a little research, and found that the "bogging" down is probably because of the carb needing rebuilding. They also said something about the choke - anyone know about this? Why would this cause it to die at idle? Thanks again guys

I rebuilt my carb on my 200ci after I first got it. the gasket on the bowl was leakingthe more I drove it, Since it was sitting for years it made sense that the gasket was rotten. inside that card are a few needle valves and pumps that can either starve the flood the carb if they get stuck. its an easy enough fix. you can get the rebuild at autozone for the old autolite carbs for usually under $15.

I'd try an rebuild and I bet that will clear some of the issues up nicely.

Good good. I also looked into throwing a 2bbl Holley 2100 on there. That may be a summer project though

So one more thing - that is the reason it is dying in idle?

Default RE: 200ci engine problems

I had a similar problem last summer with my 65 convertible, 200 ci. It was recently tuned up, with a new distrubutor in which I added a 1st generation Pertronics, but it still had a rough idle when stopped, tranny engaged and my foot on the brake. A friend suggested that Imight have avacum leak, so I replaced the gasket where the carb (Holley 1bbl) bolts onto the intake. It still idled rough. I finally went into the carb and discovered it had a broken float. I replcced that and now everything's fine. I'd check for a possible vacum leak, then make sure your carb is mechanically sound. Gaskets are really cheap and a re-build kit is also relatively inexpensive. Is that an Autolite 1100 you're using?

Hope you solve the problem, good luck!
