'71: 140 steady cruise. Generally around 120 for the quarter. Them STI's are lucky to be within 3 car lengths.

'03: 110 when passing a couple pokeys on the highway.

'93 Explorer: 90mph. Plenty fast, thankyouverymuch.

'65 F250: 70mph...Transfer case input bearing is a bit loose (gettin' a rebuild...then 100+ is possible for someone with bigger ones than I got).[&o]

 

There seems to be some confusion or maybe some education needs to take place. It doesn't matter how many forward speeds you have without AOD, the top gear in all of these transmissions (withoug AOD) is 1 to 1 ratio, In other words, my 3rd gear in my car is the same ratio as the 4th gear in a toploader or a C4. It's the gears in the rear that make the engine run more RPM's with higher gear ratios. A 3:00 rear will run with less RPM's than a 4:11 rear.

 

soaring, with that in mind what would a 65 with a c4, slightly moded (my car!! performer rpm airgap intake, 650 cfm carb, headers, exhaust) top out at? my next mods are gunna be a posi unit and some gears, originally i was thinkin 373s, but now that i no longer have a need for highway driving 4.11s might be in my future, i dont need to go over 110-120. thanks

 

mine used to go past 120 with the 3.00 rear but at that speed i wasnt looking down at the dash too often. it was pretty floaty. never did work out if the speedo keeps going around or jams up against some sort of stopper??

with the 3.55 rear, it will pull about 115at near enough to 5500. it will still crack 120 with the bigger wheels on but thecurrent engine falls off the perch at about 5700 so Im more concerned about an internal failure than bits falling off the suspension.

assuming your car wont pull much more than 5500rpm, 4.11 will give you a top speed of 99.54mph! 3.73 will give you 109mph.

 

HA! 99 mph, i wonder if that has somekinda back to the future effect, maybe ill go forward to the past? anyway, thanks for the calculations! hmm, do i REALLY need to go over 100 mph?[&:]

 

if you ever drive on the highway the 4.11 will drive you nuts. But, on the other hand,if you want to blast from the lights and get to your 99mph very quickly....

 

Well I guess I have to answer seeing as fast 65 posted this for my benifit!!

I was driving my 90 Stang back from Michigan to Arizona, way back when it was new. I was hitting about 110 to 115 coming down US 54 thriugh NM. I hit a big vulture on my side of the windshield. I saw it coming, took my foot off the gas, and my hands off the wheel to cover my face with mt arms. I guess God was with me, I hit the bird at the juncture of the top of the windshield and the top of the roof. The windshield pushed in about 2 inches at the top and shattered al the way across. If the bird would have been an inch or two lower it probably would have killed me.

I haven't gone that fast since..

Don't really know in the stang becuse speedo no work, but I did have it up to 4K in forth gear with i think a 280 rear. I would guess somewhere around 100, But way back when I was 16 I had a 74 grand torino which I took to a long stright lightly traveled road had the speed come back to 0 before I let off of it toughts of tires and what not it had a 120mph speedo so I guess about 140+. it pretty bad when a boat like that feels like its floating.

 

i got clocked doing 168 in my camaro...by a CHP. that sucked. for a long time...

I could see where that would be an issue,,,, and for a long time. Sounds like it might have been more than just a speeding ticket,, or at least it could have been much worse than just a very badspeeding ticket.
