Alternator Help??????
Well I have a charging problem with my car AGAIN. Every couple of years I have charging issues with my car. I am like on my 4 voltage regulator & my like 3rd alternator. My car is a 1966 coupe & has a late model 5.0 crate motor that is carburated. About a year or two agao when I needed a new alternator the guy at Mustangs Unlimited told me instead of getting the original voltage regulator to get a late model Motocraft voltage regulator because he said with my car being stored over the winter every couple of years the contacts in the voltage regulator probably corrode and that is the source of my problem. Well I did try the later style regulator and I am having problems again.
Question? Do they sell/can I get an alternator with the voltage regulator in one unit and just get rid of my original voltage regulstor? Will this eliminate my problems once and for all? I know I would have to rewire my harness, but at this point I need to try something different cause I am sick of buying alternator/voltage regulators & a new battery every 2-3 years. Thanks in advance for any help.

is the battery flat after you get the car out after storage or when does it usually occur ?
Or does the car just stop charging at some point and you get indication via the warning light in the dash ?

This time I noticed when I took the car out at night and I can tell when my interior lites are not that bright & do not brighten when i give it gas and by the time I got home my signal light indicators in the car were dead, so I know it's about to **** the bed.
Try a one wire unit. The voltage regulator is built in. You end up dumping the external regulator and the wiring. You can get a high output one for between one and two hundred.
so it seems to not charge.
I don't know if i'd bl;ame the voltage regulator. the car is 40+ years old. maybe it's just a bad connection on the ground of the alternator.
Can you check that ? do you have a multimeter to measure volts, ohms and amps ?

Ya, it's measuring about 11.35-11.50, and it does not change when I give it some throttle eaither. I just want it fixed once and for all. I don't care how much it costs at this point. This is the only gremlin this car has had since day one when I bought it 10 yrs ago.
yah that's no charge whatsoever.
Can you check that
a) the alternator is properly grounded ? measure OHM between battery minus and alternator GND or GRD when car is on or off (doesn't matter) . Should be no resistance (0 ohm). Rattle the cable, maybe it's intermittent problem
if that's not the case fix that first and see if that works for you
b) when car is off, make sure you have 12V on BAT of alternator
c) does your charge warning light work ? when ignition is on (car not running) the thing has to light up
d) clean all sockets and plugs at the firewall

Be sure also that you are hooked up correctly,, there is a black post on the rear of the alternator and then there is a ground post on the alternator. The black post is not the ground,, its the stator of the alternator.. So if your ground is hooked up to that black post it will not charge.. I know becuase that is what I did.. If you are sure its hooked up correctly check the resistance between the bat. + and the red alternator post.. Then check the resistance between the smaller line next to the bat. post and the plug that goes into the voltage regulator.. your 3 prong connection between the two could be corroded.. (also my case)
Kalli is the man when it comes to alternator problems by the way.. He really helped me out with mine..
