64 1/2 d code ?
Hello.
There should be a date code stamped in the hood back near the D/S hood hinge on the back. Not all of the 64 1/2s had the hood that folks call the 64 1/2 hood. The indy pace cars didn't have them, cars that were going to be high profile, like for the world's fair or were going on some ad campaign, didn't have that hood. The Deuce's Coupe andIaccoca's car didn't have it, etc... so, not having the 64 1/2 hood doesn't mean that the car doesn't haveit's original hood. Being a D code would certainly make it more desirable than being a U code, or an F. Being that early of a car is kind of cool. The only thing really hurting that car as far as open market value is the fact that it's a coupe. Personally, I don't get it. The 65/66 Mustang coupe is one of the prettiest cars ever built anywhere. It's much more rigid, and lighter, than a convertible, and you can actually see out of them, unlike the fastback. But, they just don't bring the money of a fastback or a convertible. You might want to look at the car a little more closely, though. It might be an indy pace car or something.

I'm not so sure about the headlights mounted up so high, unless you are going to do some off-road stuff. Just a little touch up paint on the doors too.
If you got the original 'D' code 289 engine and carburetor,it's a keeper. There were only about 45,000 made compared to 87,000 'A' code 65 models and 62,000 66's (based on percentages).

hey VeronicaScz, do you have any more info on the hood date code or how to decode it?? here is a pic of what i found on mine. thanks for any help you can give me.
Hi again.
March 17, from the Cleveland plant, 2nd shift. If you car had a scheduled production date of something in the late march, early april range, I'ld start taking a closer look at that car for real.Hope that helps.

Hi again.
Your hood could have been built on march 17 of 64, 65 or 66. There isn't a code indicating a year stamped on the sheet metal of a 65/66 mustang. We could save you some time if you would post a picture of your hood that is the same view as this picture of my hood.

This would be even better, come to think of it.

Thatis very kind of you to say that David.
There are lots of folks that know a lot more than I do about these cars. Reading that date code isn't really a dark art if you know that they stamped it from the other side.
It just says 3 17 2C. that's march 17th the next number is the shift, of which there are only three possibilities, and the plant code. D for Dearborn, C for Cleveland, A for Atlanta, etc...
