Default 64 1/2 d code ?

i'm kinda new to the classic mustangs, most of my experience is with late models. i recently bought a 1964 1/2 mustang coupe with a d code engine. the car is rough but it runs and it is all there. i know the k code is the hipo engine which everyone wants, but i've read that the d code is a rare engine option and was wanting to find out if having the d code ups the value over say and 2brl 289. i'm getting ready to restore the car and i'm trying to decide if i want to restore it to original or go a more restomod route. i really like the restomods, but would it be stupid to do it to this car.

I believe the d code is a low compression engine. That imo makes it less valuable. Its rarity on the other hand may make desirable to someone.

Yeah, the D code was the first 289 and it was an 8 something compression engine. Rare? yes....desireable? No.

But it is a 4V for 641/2 only, and the fact it is a 64 1/2 it shouldn't be modded any. Does it have the original motor in it?

Rare only in the sense that there were about 42,000 Mustangs were made with that engine. The bad part is that V-8's in 64 usedfive bolts to the bell housing vs six bolts for mid year 65 (thru 67)289's. Finding a replacement is difficult. There are also many other 64 only things, like generator vs alternator, horn relays, different hood and headlight buckets, etc. I would opt for a stock rebuild. Keep in mind that generators sometime play havoc with current AM/FM/CD?Cassette radios.

yes it does have the original motor in it and the motor runs smooth and quiet. it is an early build date car too (april 2). all of the 64 1/2 specific parts are there. about the only thing that i have found so far that does not seem right is the hood. the front lip of the hood is rolled under like a 65, so i'm not sure if the hood was replaced at some time or what.

The differences between the 64 1/2 and the 65 are explained in the FAQ.
