Default Stalling in driven gears

As you knowI rebuilt the carb tigthen the valve lash and got the idle ok if not a little to high, need to buy tach to see what it is,but when i put here in gear the rpm drops and she stumbles and stalls. Now I first thought it was the valve lash being to tight but then why would it work ok in idle and not in gear, so i don't think it is that. My other thought was the transmission was a little low on fluid but was frothy but ok so added 500ml didn't really test tonight (please don't be the torque convertor). Could it be my timeing i haven't checked it and also don't know how but thought that would not be it. What else do i need to check?

It's your timing. I had the same problem. Set it at 6BTC and problem solved. Check your vacuum hoses and make sure they are plugged into the correct locations to.

You can buy a timing light that will give your RPM's too, very handy for tuning if you don't have a tach. http://www.partsamerica.com/productd...egoryCode=3390 Sorry, no pic with it.

I would suggest a vacuum leak, but your timing might be suspect. Use carb cleaner to locate a vacuum leak. If your timing is correct, it might be plausible that your timing marks on the harmonic balancer are off. Remove all spark plugs to make turning the eng easier, and use a pistonstop in #1, manually turning the motor one direction then the other, and perfect center of those two marks is TDC.

You should be able to run it at 8-10* BTDC no problem.

Paddy, what does it idle at when its in park or neutral? If its too low then the car will stall out when you put it in gear. Does your car have a hi-performance cam in it? If so youll need to raise the RPM's higher like around 800-1000 rpm when idling or in park. Also, make sure the carb didnt loosen up. I had a similar problem in my ranger (302, AOD), somehow the carb mounting nuts had loosened up and I had a HUGE vacuum leak. For some reason when it wasnt in gear it would run just fine. As soon as I put it in gear it would stumble or just stall out. Tightened it up and everythingwas ok.

Cheers, i sprayed some wd40 around the base of the carb and no increase in revs so i amthink the carb intake is fine and might be the timing. Being a 65 i have no tach sound like a goodexcuse to get a rally pack!!! but will double check in case they are lose also I replaced the PCV could that fail it seems so simple so i doubt it that.
