Default Not starting

My starter is fine. I am getting spark but I have a very hard to start I6 that I just completed an engine rebuild on. It will turn for to a point that it almost catches but it doesn't start.

Things you should know. I am working the carburetor by hand while someone else turns the key.
1.) Sometimes the car turns but doesn't start.
2.) Sometimes it only turns a couple of turns and then nothing.
3.) It seems to turn the most when I have pumped gas into the carb but how much is too much in the this case. I have Holley 2bbl 2300. I don't want to flood it but I don't think that I am allow a enough gas before I try to turn it over.

All advice is helpful.

THe best advise I can think of without really knowing what your problem is that the first thing you need to do is to make sure that it is not flooded. Pull the plugs and roll it over for a little bit to help expell any excess fuel that might be in the intake/cylinders (with the fuel line disconected and plugged.

Dry the sparkplugs, install them and try to start the engine with the fuel line still disconnected. If the engine tries to fire, you probably were flooded before.

If it turns out that your engine was not flooded, the timing is the most likely culprit. put a timing light on it, and make sure that the vac advance hose is dis-connected.

We just had a thread on that Sean. Just teasing. If your engine was just rebuilt, and it won't start, then make sure you have the initial timing correct. Even if it is not perfect, it should fire and run rough. It sounds like you aren't even close, and maybe 180 out.
