New promblem
Well the exhaust is in, sounds great when the car runs. Ihave a backfire issue through the exhaust, not the carb. Pulled the plugs out, and they were fuel fowled. I tried to set the air fuel mixture, and now it won't run at all,. I am thinking i flouded it. The thing is how do you get the air/fuel mixture the way you want it. I am getting to a breaking point. It is just one thing after another. Trying to start it so many times. also drained the battery. I should have just left the damn thing alone. The other thing is, when i step on the gas, to the floor, the butterfly will not open all the way, is this the reason for all the fuel in the plugs?
Turn the fuel mixture screw(s) all the way in and then back them out 1 1/2 turns. Try to start it. If it runs rough back the screw(s) out slowly until it either gets better or worse. If it gets worse turn the screw(s) back in slowly until it gets back to the same point and loosen the distributor bolt. Turn the whole distributor again until it gets worse or better. You might also try replacing spark plugs, wires and the distributor cap.
Good info Sweet. On the butterfly, do you have a 2 or 4 barrel carb. If you have a 2 barrel, the butterfly won't open all the way until the engine warms up, and has nothing to do with the amount of gas and air that is fed to the engine. If it is a 4 barrel, the secondaries open when you stomp it. Is that what your are talking about? The secondaries won't open all the way?
it is a 2 barrel, and i just was reading about them not opening all the way. Sweet65, thats what i was looking for. Now how do i go about all the unburned fuel? The other thing is where should i set the air/fuel dial to, while i am doing the fuel set screws?
Take out the spark plugs and leave it over night to let the excess fuel evaporate out. As for the "Air/Fuel Dial" I have never messed with one because I ripped my 289 out and put in a 351w with an edelbrock carb before I ever had problems. I would assume that you would want to set the dial to the middle of the range when adjusting it but someone will correct me if I'm wrong.
is there anyone that can chime in, and tell me how the butterfly should look, with the air fuel mixture dial in the middle should look, it would be a big help. I just went and set the set screws the way sweet 65 mentioned, i can't try and start it, because kids are sleeping, and battery is charging. But i would like to start fresh tomarrow with everything the way it SHOULD look. Why after install of headers and exhaust, did i find this promblem in the first place, car ran great before.
What the hell is an air/fuel dial? If you are talking about the black choke pot you need to have the engine cold, then set it to where the butterfly is just barely closed, then check it again after the engine heats up to see that it has opened all the way. Again, the butterfly on a two barrel carb has nothing to do with the air/fuel mixture when the engine is warm. That, and only at idle, is adjusted by the two screws at the front base of the carb.
okey, i got you. Still trying to figure why this all went south after install of exhaust. Sorry-Black choke pot is the real term. Just frustrated. Hope to start fresh and get this all worked out.
I'm not an expert or anything but it sounds kind of like this was a pre-existing problem which was not noticable due to the extra back pressure from the stock or previous exhaust. It really sounds like the timing is too late and the plug is firing after the exhaust valve opens which could have been dampened by the back pressure.
i tend to agree with that. I always had a slight stumble on excell, and i think that was a sign. Now it is just real noticable. I just need to find a local guy that can get everything running good.
