Warm start problem--need advice
I have a 68 with stock 289 2bl. It runs great in everyway except when restarting after 15-30 minutes.
The owners manual says to hold the accelerator pedal 1/2 way to the floor when starting the engine when its hot. To restart our 68 after it has been shut down for 10-15 minutes, you have to hold the accelerator most of the way to the floor. The car is essentially flooding it self after it sits for a few minutes. If the engine is fired up in less than 10 minutes after shut down or after it has cooled down, the engine starts normally--no flooding.
After the engine is up to temp and shut down and with the air cleaner removed, I have observed engine fumes/vapor coming from around the venturies of the Autolite 2100 after about 10-15 minutes. I have set the float level, replaced the seat and needle valve, replaced the power valveand replaced the check ball (old one had pits in it) in the accelerator pump circuit.
Some how, after the engine has been shut down for a few mintes, fuel is dribbling in to the venturi area and I haven't figured out how. I was convinced my pitted check ball was the cause but once it was replaced, I still have the problem.
Any ideas? Is the engine hot soak causing the problem? How do I prevent it? Thanks for your help.
