Default engine year

I have my car in the air and pulled the starter due to metal to metal noise when I accelorate. My ring gear is getting chewed up by my starter. The sproket in my started floats back and forth. With it floating, it is making contact with the teeth on the pressure plate. That explains the noise when I excellortate from a stop. The gear floats back into the pressure plate. Now I need to buy a starter. I am looking at my casting numbers on the engine and don't recognise them. I am used to 60's and 70's numbers. These are AE 15B. Then there is a large "3" below that and 7m next to that. Anybody have a clue. I tried googling it with no luck. Thanks in advance.

A picture, after some wire brushing and snow removal, might help. It's got to look tike this.

I am sure my engine is a late year. I went back out and looked on both sides. I know the number are stamped next to the starter but I check the other side since I have never had a late year engine before.

So, are you concerned that you don't have the right starter in there and need to replace it with the right one? The starters for all 289's and 302's were the same. One thing I found out was that if you have a manual transmission, you need to order a starter for an automatic. Trust me on this. I spent an entire afternoon trying to get a manual starter in my manual engine, and it was just too fat around the lip. I even used a file to try to get it to fit to no avail. I don't know whay Ford screwed up this way, but they did. I ordered one for an automatic because of a suggestion from a member of a mustang forum and it worked. Go figure.

I wasn't thinking this was the wrong starter. I am sure there are differences though. I remember my old mustangs had a stud that the cable connected to. This one is a small bolt that goes through the cable

It looks like a casting problem in the part number area. A typicalcasting number would read C5AE-6015-B. You got __AE __15 B and part of a date code of 7M_ that would equate to December, 1967 without a week. That would be a 68 engine but I can't find my book with engine casting numbers. Bear with me.

Got it, the casting number is C5AE-6015-B, a 289 2V for a 1968 Mustang (or other Ford).

Jim, thank you for breaking the code. Now that I have a rare mis stamped engine block, that makes the stang worth $5000 more, right? I have read some of your posts and you are very intellegent with Ford facts. Did you work for FoMoCo in the past, or is it just a passion? You are a great contributor to this board.

So get a load of this. I called Schucks to price a reman starter. They wanted $56. Not bad at all. I went to my friend's house to see if he had any laying around. I found one that wouldn't bench test. So we took a ride to another guys house and found one on a Ford Econoline van that was burnt and laying on it's side. Pulled the starter off (couldn't get much easier with it on it's side) and it looked brand new on the inside. The outside had little surface rust. What did it cost? A half rack of Milwaukee's Best ICE[:'(]. But here's the best part. Next to the van was a granada. He was going to have it hauled off next week so I made a deal for the front disk brakes---$50! And just earlier in the day I made a deal with another guy who is going to pull the brakes off a granada in his yard for $50. Now I'll have 3 sets of disk brakes. In the end, I went and got new cables (starter, ground, and possitive) and the starter works great. No more metal to metal sound either. What a good day!

It's all about being in the right place at the right time for parts, cars and things used in life; and yes, I did work at Ford - Ford Aerospace and Communications Corp -building satellites, tracking stations and other 'things' like the Mustang GTP. I also spent a lot of my time trying to figure out what our suppliers were delivering to us for use in military projects (a lot of it was 'garbage') so I got into the habit of instead of making a mistake and doing it wrong, I made a mistake and did it right.
