Cobra valve covers
The first cars to have the valve covers were the 289 Cobras. The 65 Shelby Mustangs had the open-letter covers and had a chrome, circular air cleaner with the HiPo decal. Here is an example (These are Tiger covers..but they also say, "powered by Ford). Here is another Shelby Cobra variant.
The Cobra valve covers did continue to be installed on early 1967 HiPo 289s, but there were only a handful. True, dealers did install some after Ford stopped installing them (there really isn't any documentation that addresses this).
Today, the Motorsport catalog offers a few variations that resemble some of these covers for both FE and small block engines.
I have researched this using old photos and publications from the 60's and early 70's extensively. Someday, I'll scan all the magazines and pubs so that others can benefit.
I am finally resolved to installing a set of current open-letter covers to go with my Cobra oval air cleaner...both have the black finish.

If any of you don't care for your cobra valve covers, I'll trade my Ford racing chrome valve covers with the fancy winged bolts and my super shnazey Ford racing air cleaner. What a deal! Each pay our own shipping of course. The cobra valve covers must be nice too.

All the cars I saw back in the 60's had unpainted covers. I bead blasted mine and painted them with Rustoleum silver aluminum and they look very good.

Hi again.
The 65 GT-350s had the open letter, bare aluminium vale covers. They started using the black, closed letter type on the 66s. Here are a couple of pictures of 65 Shelbys. Both are real cars, not clones, and both are double digit cars, as in two of the first hundred.Hope that helps.

I went thru my old 35MM picture files (pre digital camera) and found a picture I took of the engine compartment of 6S001, the 1966 GT350 prototype. A friend of mine was doing some minor work on it for the car's new owner. Note the low profile valve covers.
