new distributor
Make sure you have the right dizzy gear material(iron gear for iron cam, steel gear for steel cam etc), lube it properly, make sure your timing is correct before you start it(enough for it to start anyway) and hope that whoever built that engine(if someone's been in it) remembered to keep the clip on the oil pump drive shaft. And you might have to take a few runs at it to get it to gon in and having the timing line up reasonably, close, you have to get the gear and the drive shaft for the oil pump to line up
if you're exchanging the distributor.
actually quite easy.
- gear in neutral
- take off the distributor cap
- turn the engine manually (in the same direction as it would naturally turn. not backwards) until the marking for top dead center matches
- check the distributor finger. it should point to where the cable for 1st cylinder has been (1st cyl is on your left closest to you if you're standing in front of car).
if it doesn't. turn the engine by another 360 degrees (full turn).
When you have top dead center and finger pointing to first. get rid of old distributor and put in the new one. so that the finger again points to where wire for 1st cylinder was. same direction as the finger in old distri).
Sometimes the finger turns when you push the distributor in. if it does. pull it out and turn the finger back a bit. so you end up with distributor in and the finger pointing to the old position).
- put the cap back on.
If you're exchanging the cap as well, make sure to remember what spark wire goes where. But you'll find that info in every manual as well if you forgot.
Your engine should start up no problems then but you need to adjust timing and/or dwell
