Which motor, tranny do I have?
Hello,
I'm new to this forum and I have a couple of question Im hoping you guys can help me out with. I have a 69 Mustang which I purchased, I am told it has a 351W and a C4 automatic Transmission. How Would i find out what it has. I want to start adding some hi performance parts. right now I just have an Edelbrock 4V Carb on it.
Also how do get my carb or any carb to open all 4 valves at the same time instead of just the two primary and then the 2 secondaries?
Any info will be appreciated,
Thanks

1.
If it has 6 valve cover bolts its a windsor based motor (as apposed to a 351c)
If it has the upper radiator hose into the intake it is a windsor based motor (as apposed to a 351c)
2. Look at the shape of your tranny pan. If it is square it is a c4 if it is roughly in the shape of Utah it is a c6.
3. To open all 4 barrells on a carb, put your foot all the way down while driving
...if you have a vacuum secondary carb this will open the secondaries. If the car isn't running you can get them to open just buy pulling on the linkage and looking down the throat. If you have a double pumper carb, they will open when the linkage is pulled all the way since they are mechnically control and not vacuum controlled. Since you have an auto trans, you most likely will have vacuum secondaries.
Now the question, why are you trying to open all 4 barrells?
If you want to make for sure that it has a 351w vs a 302 pull the starter and look at the block casting numbers, this will tell you for sure what the block is. However, since the 351w was the 351 motor installed in mustangs in 1969, and the previous owner told you that was the motor and tranny combintation.....why would you doubt the information?

another thing is if u want to know what the engine was original in ur 69 check the vin. over all they came with 302s and windsors, and i think with sum clevelands. but yeah buy those parts for the windsor, im building 351w and stroking it to 408 in my 69, but overall good luck on building ur stang

You don't want to open all four throats at once unless you are ready to launch very fast, or are passing. If the secondaries are not opening when you put the pedal to metal, then you have a linkage problem that needs to be adjusted. Check the valve cover for 6 bolts to identify it as a 351W as DS suggested. Most likely, that is what you have since Ford manufactured far less C's than they did W's. The C-6 tranny was put in Mustangs from 1971-1991. If your PO says it has a C-4, then most likely that is what it has. But, you never know if someone put a C-6 in it. Check the shape of the pan as DS suggested.
If the drive train is original and a 351w, you should have an FMX tranny because that's how they came. 35 years is plenty of time for who knows to change almost anything on your car. The most certain way is find the casting numbers on the block, heads and tranny before buying any parts.
If the bell housing is removable with the bolt heads inside the bell housing, it's a C4. If it's removable with four bolts that go through the body of the tranny into the bell from the outside, it's an FMX. If the bell is not removable, it's a C6. If you determine that you have a Windsor, an easy way to tell if it's a 302 or a 351 is to look at the lower thermostat housing bolt. With a 302 you will not be able to put a socket on it because it is behind the water pump. With a 351 you can because the block is taller and the bolt is not behind the pump.
Thank you guys for the advice, I will most defenatly check, Thanks again for the helpful hints. Also about the kick down rod/linkage. It is not connected to my carb, is this why the secondaries are not opening?
If so I suppose I will have to buy the Plates they sell for the edelbrock carb so I can connect them.
Thanks Everyone.

The following applies to my Holley carb...not sure about Edelbrocks.
The kick down rod and linkage on the drivers side goes down to the tranny. When you stab the gas pedal, it signals the tranny to quickly downshift into a lower gear.
Your secondaries will only open while driving along and stabbing the gas pedal. They will/should not open while you are parked or in neutral. On the passenger's side of the carb, there should be a housing for the secondary spring, assuming it is vacuum actuated. This can be replaced to tune the secondary opening characteristics...
Anybody sure about Edelbrocks?
