1966 Back-up Lights
My 1966Mustang had no operating back-up lights when I bought it. It has both of the complete back-up light assemblies but the wiring to them is missing. The wiring on the backside of the backup lights themselves has been cut off about one inch from the light assembly. I can't even tell what color wires they were. I need to rewire the lights but don't knowwhere to connect the wiring. I think maybe the wiring originally ran off the taillights and thru the trunk floor down to the backup lights but I'm not sure. There isan electrical connector that comes off the back of the taillightsthathas a female opening with no wire plugged intoit. I think this opening is for a wire with a bulletmale connector.
My Ford Shop manual does not have a wiring diagram for this and my Chilton's Mustang Repair manual does not show any wiring at all for back-up lightson the1966 electrical schematic.
I think I've heard that the wiring mustalso be connected to a back-up switch mounted on the transmission but I don't know.
All my other lights on the car operate like they are supposed to.
I would appreciate any advice on how to repair this or where I can find the right information.
My car is a 1966 convertible, with a 200HP engine and a C-4 auto transmission.

If you look at the tail end area of your transmissuion you will see the back-up light switch that activates the rear back-up lights when you put the car in reverse. That switch needs to be replaced with a working switch. If the wiring is completely missing then you willl need to trace to where the wires hook up. We have wiring diagrams in the FAQ.
not all cars had backup lights they were optional on the 65-66 cars so maybe someone added a non original valance and that why your lacking the lights

Uh, this may be a dumb question, but where do I find the FAQ section? (I'm a newbie)

I suggest you order a pair of backup light assemblys Manual (National Parts Depot, aka NPD 2007 catalog pg 129, housingsL & R, housing seals, nuts, lenses, lens seals, screws) and a 66 Mustang Electrical Assembly Manual (NPD pg 191)for starts. I recomend all new items as your may have been on the car since 1966 (all 1966 cars required back-up lights). As this is not normal, you may need a new back-up light switch (transmission mounted) and possible one or two new harnesses. The only reason I can think of for cutting wires a the lights was the switch was stuck and the previous _owner (insert your own adjective between the last two words) simply cut the wires where the problem was seen, at the lights.

Soaring and Jim:
Thank you both for all your help onmy back-up lightsituation. Don't know what we would do without you two and yes, Jim, I have added quite a few adjectives recently before the previous owners name.
