Default before i drill!!!!

can anyone give me tips on how to line up quarter panel ornaments before marking and drilling holes?

with the posts not being removable.. im paranoid about how the ornaments are going fit into place.. Im assuming that the curve of the ornament is supposed to match the curve of the quarter panel on the car.

so... how does one know exactly where to place the posts of the ornament to mark for holes... or is there a secret marking I'll find on the inside of the panel when i open it up from the interior?

this is the absolute first time Ive drilled into my 66 coupe.. and am more than a little paranoid of gettingthe hole placement wrong.

any sage advise would be most appreciated...

also.. as a newbie to this forum.. is this the correct board to place this question on? if not, please direct me to the 'better baord'.

thanks in advance.

You could try using double sided tape to line up the ornament. When you are happy with the position, mark where the holes go and drill away! Dont be afraid grasshopper...there is no hole bondo cant fill!!!!!![8D]

Before you go crazy wondering if you'll riun the car. Go to a junk yard or find a unused or dumped model and yanked the trim off that car and measure from the door gap in the distance. Even with a large peice of paper and you could draw a template which used the lines of the scoop as a outline point. Then you could mark through the paper the hole position. I may be alot of trouble to go out and find this but I too have not been able to find details on measurements for these items so this was my only option. Better then drilling unnecessarily.

Virginia Classic Mustang sells a kit with the templates. Other than that, a used 1/4 panel piece can be used as a template.
Here's what I did: I used the old emblems, broke off the "pins" so there was only a slight little bit sticking out, I lined it up on the 1/4 panel and LIGHTLY tapped it to make marks on the panel, then I drilled my holes over the marks. If the holes come out a little off, with some ingenuity they can be enlarged a little bit(and with strong adhesive) the emblems can be set in place and then secured. Being careful, it can be done. It just takes patience. Good Luck.
