Most times reliability suffers when you increase horsepower. Is the 289 original to the car? If it is and money permits, you can build a cost effective reliable 351W based engine and keep the 289 original and on a standin case you ever want to put it back to stock.

most people arent to hip on stroking 289 blocks because the piston skirts are shorter, if your going to do a stroker start with a 302 block

This all comes down to budget
you want 400 plus hp...how much are you prepared to spend?
How much have you set aside for brakes, steering and suspension
what rear are you planning to run?
what gearbox?

IMO you are better off to do all the rest and then add engine last. That way you have a car that can handle it and is ready to be enjoyed straight away. Engine first means miles on it before you can really use it while you slowly but surely break the rest of the car.

If you've blown the budget on the painting and getting the interior back to some sort of shape, there are a few things you can do to get some fun out of the car while you save for the rest.

1) assuming the 289 is still a good runner - is it 2 or 4bbl? That's option 1 because carb and inlet manifold can be had pretty cheap 2nd hand and its easy.
2) what exhaust is on it? Extractors or not, if it sounds fast it is more fun - a simple muffler change can do that
3) change the rear diff ratio - if its stock, its probably 2.8 or 3.0 to 1. Change to a 3.5 or higher and you will get a big boost in off the line acceleration straight up.

it has the stock 2bl.. so i would be upgrading to a 4bl with a new intake as well. i am guessing the rpm air gap manifold from what emporofchicken stated..

yea i am starting to think that 400 is a reachable goal.. but way up there... i am hopeing for 300-400 with the stroker/cam/intake/carb/full exhaust is that a reachable goal??? i think it should be within reason. and i might just get it blown to top it off.. it all just depends on $$$ and time.. i belive that i can get all this done its just a matter of time.

my goals for this build is not really soo much top end . more of off the line and mid range.. i dont need to go over 120.. so right now i am looking at the right parts.

anybody want to help me find the right stuff for this kind of build ????

You will need heads too, but that is a very attainable goal. The 5.0 section is full of guys that have stroked their 302 to do some crazy stuff. One thing to keep in mind though: any thing above 300 hp/lbs of torque, and you will need to replace every other component of your drivetrain.

Cobra Automotive build 289 race engines above 520hp, not stroked, blown orNOSdso anything is possible.

The hardest part of the engine build is not the parts its the machine work and making sure all the pistons, crank and everything else is balanced - thats why I pay someone else to do it

Seriously tho - best bang for bucks will be your gearing. a 350hp engine in a car with 4.11 is a fast thing. Especially a 65 stang b/c they're not that heavy. Less hp means less $ on components that can be spent on lightening and balancing which will make it more able to handle the punishment you intend giving it, but you're gunna be rebuilding the drive train anyhow (by the sounds of your driving ambitions).

yea right now it has the so called "one wheel peel"....lol... and that has got to goo....

yea i belive i just might go with the 331 stroker kit, i should be gettin that within the next couple of weeks.

and also what cam should i get because i need one that gets the most power at lower rpms cause like i said i dont need to go that fast. i just need that uphh to get me off the line quickly..

and any carb suggestions??

which intake manifold suggestions??

i am use to the fuel injected and the mod motors.. this carb stuff is still a lil weird to me...lol
