Default 351c cam

hey guys, havnt been on in awhile, i moved from japan now im in florida and im expecting my 73 by next week. with my new income im gunna get a new cam and heads.

im building the engine to be all low and mid end, i still want a red line of 5 grand but i dont like spinning it up that fast anyways. i was looking on summit racing and i found an edelbrock cam and the basic operating range is idle-5500 and that sounds perfect but im not sure i'll feel any more power, let me know if anyone else is running a cam in a cleveland and likes the low end. mine's a 2bbl with 750 edelbrock carb and edel intake, electric fan, distributer, and fan. it's ported/polished with stock heads. milled block bored .030 over with higher compretion heads. perfecinaly balanced and blueprinted. im running a rebuilt and balanced c6 tranny with balanced driveshaft and a 9" rear w/ 2.73:1 (got the 3.70:1 in the back seat just waiting on a good locking diff)

EDL-2172 is the model number for the edel cam, but if anyone else can think of a better cam for me, please let me know. i need to start working on V8s again and get skyline motors out of my head!

i have a lunati bracket master II cam and lifters, PN 00093lk on summit. i havnt had much chance to drive it yet but it should be a nice ride. i also have a weiand single plane x-celerator intake manifold, and i will be putting longtube hooker comps on here.

so you have 2v heads?

i had this cam in my 72 i had it was extremely explosive off idle i was running a .30 overbore with dome piston and open chamber 2v heads for a compression ratio of 10.2:1 with a stall converter in the range of 2800rpm. i had a little detonation and feel the motor could have used alot more came because it pulled like a bat out of hell all the way up wanted to go for more but the cam fell on its face.

ya its got 2bbl heads but im about to go aussie cause i dont wanna buy a new intake manifold already.

what do you mean the cam fell on its face? i was thinking about a read line of only 5200-5500 maybe 6, and i was only gunna put a 2k stall in it. its a C6, does anyone think it needs a shift kit? that big b***h shifts hard but smooth already.

i feel it studder sometimes, is that because my spark might be too hot? or not hot enough. i've moved away from the people who blue printed my engine so i have no idea what they would say.

btw, it showed up this afternoon on a huge tracter trailer hawler with a bunch of beamers and mine stood out a mile!

Detonation is a problemwith the stock 2V heads when you bump up the compression ratio. I'm not sure what about the casting causes it, but it seemsto be more than a myth. Edelbrock now makes 2V aluminum Cleveland heads, and CHI out of Australia also makes several Cleveland heads. All of the neat Cleveland stuff is produced in Australia, Parker makes a custom manifold, with cast tongues that you glue in the runners of 4V heads to make them flow and perform better. All of the aftermarket heads seem to be about $2,000 a pair. I wanted a motor with lots of torque for off the line umph.

Here's what I used
Crower 15244 Grind 297HDP (which is their stage 4.. 2000-6000 rpm)
CHI 2V heads
Custom flat top pistons with valve reliefs for a compression ratio of about 10.5:1
Edelbrock Performer RPM air gap intake
BG Demon 750 carb with Vacuum Secondary
Sanderson FC-4 Shorty headers
Stroked it to 377"
Put a bunch of nice stuff into the engine to keep it in one piece.

Here's what I got out of it on the engine dyno... I wish we could have started the pull at a lower RPM, because this thing is a torque beast in the mid range.

Cleveland engines have big ports and really like bigger cams. They have plenty of low end, but excel in the upper mid range area. A well built engine has no problem with a few RPM, especially the C. If you want low rpm, you really should be looking at smaller ports in the heads/intake.

Shane,
I would have went with the CHI intake a 3V heads if I was looking for more horsepower. The shop that built up my Cleveland has built up a 650+ horse Cleveland with CHI 3V heads and intake, it was just way more than I wanted... So I went with the 2V heads.

The performer RPM airgap is nice and streetable, and if I wanted more I could always swap in something else, along with a mechanical secondary carb.

it has to do with the way the flame travels across the combustion chamber the quench heads have a better flame front they say
