The c-6 I picked up is from a 72 Torino with a Cleveland so it will fit. I am building this for some power but built to last. ARP bolts and performance parts. Not for drag racing just for street fun. The pistons are Kieth Blacks @ .030 over with some dome, rated 10.5:1. Heads were resurfaced but not much off. I will have more pix soon.

I was told it would be a week, so I figured it would take 2 weeks. It will be a month on Sunday due to the machine shop! My mechanic is a bit upset at them. They pressed the # 8 piston on the rod backwards and when he took it back to them they said that it was only the second time in 20 years that they have done that. It just happens to be both times were done to him. I am glad I took it to my mechanic because I would have used the same machine shop and he has found a few little things that I would not have known and fixed them. He says they do a good job but you do have to watch for things. He also did something to the rings just incase I ever want to put NOS on it!?!

I was hoping it would be done today, but the tranny isn't done yet and the driveline isn't back yet. He said the engine will be in the car today.

With 2V heads, a 4v carb, headers, and the 268 cam figure around 300-320 hp relatively easily.

I figured this would make more power! How do the new cars make so much power? The new ones are only 4.6 and mine is a 5.8. Even the 5.0s were making more power. Fuel injection can't add that much can it?

Too late now but what would it take to get 400 hp out of a Cleveland?

320hp with a like amount of torque down low is the difference. The Cleveland makes more useable power throught the entire rpm range it runs in, thana 4.6 does. The new 3 valve head on the 05 up Mustangs uses airflow but still lacks some torque on the bottom. They make most of the power higher up due to being a smaller engine.

A 5.0 in stock form doesnt come anywhere near 300hp.It takes a good head, and efficient intake and exhaust to get that power out of a 302. Why certain engine designs have a certain power rating and the differences in those designs and the efficiency of the engine are relatively complex. The basics are mechanical advantage and airflow. More of each makes more power, but the new engines also have a redution in parasitic drag and friction. That alone accounts for a substantial gain in power and mileage.

400hp around 5500 rpm will be enough to put a 71-73 Mustang into the mid 12s in the 1/4, and 320 will put it in the low 13s relatively easily. A low 13 second car is enough to scare the vast majority of people.

A 351 is still rather small to go for over 1hp per cube and keep it driveable. The cam you need to make 400hp with 2V heads would move the rpm range up so you need more stall and more gear, and it will lose mileage and drivability. Works good in a light race car, but a heavier street car wont like it as much. One of the Clevelands waiting to go in the Cougar is a 2V, it has a Comp Cams XE274 with the attendant valvetrain parts. It will need around a 2400 stall and 3.50 gears to really move the car, but it will still do ok with a 3.0 gear. I havent dynoed it, and not sure I will since it costs money lol.

I dont mind a car that isnt smooth and idles like stock. I like the chop and rough idle, I am used to driving cars like that so I put up with more than the average person will. the 268 cam is a small cam that will make plenty of bottom end power and still do ok on top, but making 400hp from it probably wont happen.

Dont get hung up on hp numbers, be concerned with making the car fun for you to drive. Besides the new Mustangs are slower than most people think they are. and making less power than they are rated for.

Thanks for the info. It sounds like I have made some good chioces for my car. I am building it to have fun. A friend of mine told me torque is more important than horsepower. I guess maybe he was right. I guess I will know more when I get my car back.

Here are some pix from Friday morning. Engine should be in the car now. I didn't make it over there after work, so I will get pix on Monday. I decided to name this car after 13 years. Most of my other cars have names, but this one never did.

Project ( Brutus )

The engine is in Brutus now. There is still some vacuum hoses to plumb and a few other odds and ends, but it is in. I am still waiting for the tranny and drive line. Woo Hoo, some progress. 1 month and 3 days so far.

Dale (mechanic) told me next time I should bring it in the winter because there is so much going on in the summer. He was been swamped with other stuff and keeping this going in between.

Brutus.. Cool. Be careful he doesnt stab you in the back..lol. Looks good, should be a fun ride when you get it going.

Mine is named POD. For Pit of Despair. Its been a while since I worked on it, other projects have priority in summer. The Cougar needs painted before the end of August, that way the Mustang can have the entire shop to itself for finishing. Both are getting Clevelands, the Mustang is getting the 4V and the Cougar is getting the 2V with the XE274 cam. Hopefully they will both be driveable next year and running on home brewed ethanol.

Post a video of yours when its done, and see if you can get on a chassis dyno so we can have a quantifiable result of your combination.
