I am gonna be using some filler of course on some areas where patches and new panels have been welded in. But can I use filler over the primer? I have some areas where the PO took a grinder a little too far. I am hoping to just use a skim coat of filler over these areas.
bondo can be used over the primer, on scratches and such i use some filler primer, it is made to fill in scratches and such

I have heard that it is ok to usefiller over epoxy primer but not over laquer primer. I have sparingly used filler over epoxy without issue, but if i were putting filler over some rough areas, I would be more comfortable putting it on bare metal. By going to bare metal you can ensure that the metal is rough enough (has enough "tooth") to hold the filler securly.

When going over primer with filler, you will want to be absolutly certain that the primer has absolutly no adhesion issues whatsoever because naturally is the primer comes loose, so does your filler.

Wow great info guys! Thanks alot JMD for your continuing advice. I went to the sandblasting place today with my dad and we're going to do it. The place looks really nice and they know what they're doing. And amazingly enough, there is a bodyshop next door that will epoxy primer it when it comes out of the sandblasting booth. The blasting will be roughly $500, and the epoxy primer everywhere (inside and out) like 200 I think the guy said.

And we know of a great welding company that will take care of a few things (maybe more depending on what the blasting uncovers!) and probably the floor pans as well. I'm excited!

Those are excellent prices and having it put in epoxy primer immediately after blasting is the way to go. Are you thinking about a DIY paint job?

That is a great price forthe sandblasting and a really great price for the primer. The finish left by the sandblasting will make a great surface for the primer, IMO considering the car is going straight rom the blaster to the painter, the surface prep could not be better.

Don't be concerned if the surface of the car looks rough after priming, it will block out nice and smooth.

<<edit - no matter how similar our posts look, I did not copy highhilleer's post... that was crazy, when I started this post, your post was not there yet John,,, honest,,,>>

Where are you getting it blasted? Do they do the soda blasting as well? I don't have to deal with rust, but there is at leaste two, maybe three coats of paint that have to come off. Those prices sound good, especially for L.A.

The facility looks nice, they have a full blasting booth with a giant vacuum and everything. They don't do the soda blasting, we asked about that. They arn't big fans of it at all. They say its super expensive and it doesn't cut or anything. So they don't do that, they use some kind of man made material thats not a carcinogen, I forget the name, green something. It is actually green haha. So they don't use real sand which is good.

The guy said he's been doing this for 22 years and has never had a problem with metal being warped. They actually had a mustang in the back where he blasted the trunk area only (tons of rust). The surface looked great, very clean, had texture but obviously not too much. I think its going to work out great!

And the collision repair place next door (same warehouse btw) does not normally do the epoxy primer after. They said something about they normally do work for some dealerships, but right now nothing is happening so they're doing odd jobs (like fixing that one mustang in the back) and thats why they're willing to do it. If you take it to this place they still might be willing to, I can't be sure. They have a spray booth and look like they know what they're doing.

So sometime next week I'm going to take car in, just gotta rent one of those car trailer things from uhaul (50 bucks [:@], maybe we'll find something better). I'll let everyone know how it works out and how much the price ends up being!
