66 steering box
I got a restored 66 mustang and the steering is a little on the sloppy side. I know its the stock steering but is there any way of tighting it up. It feels like the gears are not meshing together properly. Any info. would be great. thanks
There is a nut on top of the gear box that you can loosen and tighten it will allow you too tighten up some free play if the box isnt badly worn out if it is however i suggest mailing it and getting it rebuilt here http://www.stangerssite.com/ or you can spend 500 dollars and just buy a new one yeesh
from what i know (i guess these boxes are more or less the same principle as on my corvette )you have to adjust that nut to the right torque ( very difficult if not impossible just but hand).. tighten it too much will screw your box
you need a small torque wrench

1. Jack up the front end to get free turning on the front wheels and steering.
2. Unloosen the nut on top of the steering box that goes to the pitman arm and back off the slotted adjusting 'rod' one or two turns. Remember how many.
3. Get a very large wrench and unloosen the lock nut on the large adjusting nut on the shaft from the steering wheel.
4. Tighten that large adjusting nut. Move the steering wheel to check the adjustment. Repeat as necessary. The front wheels will move when you get close.
5. Tighten the lock nut on the large adjusting nut.
6. Adjust the pitman arm nut (at least back to where you started) until it's tight and a little more.
7. Tighten the lock nut, lower the car and try. If it's not better, replace the box.
