72 mach 1
I thought all mach's had the suspension upgrade as part of the package? I have done no research on this just an ASSumption....... I have seen one or two mach's with out the hockey stick stripe and I actually like it better with out.....
I have an original 72 Mach that is all there. Original paint, interior, engine is complete and retains all the original crap. The vins are in the fenders and dash panel. As you probably know, when you remove the dash panel, the VIN goes with it. You will have to unbolt the passanger side and pull it back to see it stamped in the inner fender. Drum brakes were common on a lot of 302's. Also the NACA blocks are found on most of the hoods also. As far as the gas cap, something unuasual, I have a D2 pop open (without the screw on). Hmmmmm whats wrong there. I think there was a "Nader" change about mid year (Soaring knows what I'm talking about).I would look under the right fender for a VIN as this is probably the most likely place it remains. Do the Marti thing and you will have your answers.
Maybe I can be of assistance. I have gathered a great deal of info on the 71-73's and I know more about them than I do the other years...
The VIN is attached to the dash pad frame and it is indeed easily removed and lost or replaced. The VIN is also stamped on the inner fender aprons UNDERNEATH the fenders. The decal on the door is indeed adhesive and often sanded off or painted over.
The following options were STANDARD on the Mach 1 and if your car doesn't have them, that's a bad sign.
The NACA hood, tachometer, rear sway bar , dual exhaust with H pipe , front disc brakes , Mach 1 vinyl decals on the fenders for the 71-72 , honeycomb rear trim panel , color keyed dual sport mirrors , and on the 72 they used a rubber type " Enduraflex" front bumper.
The following options WERE NOT STANDARD on the Mach 1...
Pop open fuel filler cap, ram air plenumwith flappers and air cleaner . As a side note, the pop open fuel caps looked identical from 71-73 ...EXCEPT, the 71 actually used a rubber gasket which sealed against the fuel filler neck to seal the tank.Ford was concerned about gasket failure and fuel spills so adecision was made to use the exact same cap without the rubber seal for the 72-73 models and ALL subsequent over the counter sales. The seal and vent assembly simply unscrews from the inside of the cap and a conventional twist on cap was used to seal the fuel filler neck. The pop open lid is then closed on top of the cap to conceal it. From the exterior with the pop open lid closed, theylook identical. 1971 units will bear the part number prefix D1ZE while 72 and later used theprefix D2ZE.
Considering the number of irregularities you have with your car, here's my bet. I suspect that what you have is a swapped dash pad frame and VIN number. It may be that some unscrupulous previous owner decided to " renumber " his fastback as a Mach 1 for some reason. Here's a couple of sure fire ways to prove me wrong..
1. Peel those fenders loose and check the aprons for matching VIN's.
2. Order a Marti report for an exact list of your cars options.
I hope this helps in some way and good luck on your car. It's good to see the big body cars making headway. Too many other Mustang " purists " simply turn their noses up at our heavyweights.
