Default 1965 Mustang Smoking!!! ALot!!

Car sat for about a year .

could the gas in the tank turned into varnishlike substance?

Thats my guess at it . ANd with the new engine coming ..

How do I clean it out?

My car smokes alot when i turn it on , come to a stop , or hit the pedal.

It's probably soured some. Just siphon as much out as you can and fill the tank with fresh gas when you're ready to start the new engine. That will dilute it more than enough.

You'll also want to clean out the carb and the fuel line, as the gas that's beensitting in there isn't going to be any fresher.

it probably has a drain plug in the bottom of the tank might not need to siphon anything

Is it black or light blue smoke? Black means burning too much gas. Light blue is oil, valve seals can become brittle and break after a prolonged rest.

if your car hasn't been runing for such a long time you might indeed need to replace the valve seals if you already have solved the fuel thing and still smoking (and using oil)

Thats what happend to mine.. I found all the pieces spread from the top of the heads in the oil channels all the way down and stuck into my oil screen,, which was giving me some blue smoke when I start it up.. it also sat for about 3 years before i fired it up..

I had that problem also at one time. But I changed the valve seals , and it never ever smoked again.

Know your smoke
Black - fuel, too rich
Light blue/grey - oil
White - steam, water/antifreeze

Based on the above, I'm thinking you're burning oil and the valve seals are a likely culprit. It's a hassle but you can change them in the car.

First check if you're "using" water/antifreeze and if your oil has "foam". This would indicate a head gasket problem.

Keep us posted. If you think it is a valve seal problem let us know and we can post up a repair method.
