I read that book also,,,, a long time ago...
That is where I learned about rod ratios,,,, and lots of other stuff.
Smokey was cutting edge for his time, much of his knowledge and know how, has found a home in common practice these days.
He was a real trailblazer.

im only 21 so it was only 3 years ago for me, of course ive re read it 3-4 times and i own every engine building and ford performance book out there now, you learn atleast one good tip from each of them id say, i love the donald farr boss 302 book and the holman moody nascars first premier team book.
Smokey's garage, aka. "The Best Damn Garage in Town" on Beach Street was sold here in Daytonajust a few years back. Heard tell they had all kinds of treasures in that building. ie. Small block chevy hemi heads, L88 components up the whang etc. I don't know what happened to all of that stuff but I do remember seeing an interview where he said that the small block chevy hemi heads "were just no damn good"

Even thoughthose heads wereno good, I be they will bring a pile of money someday....
here is my typical small block setup for an all out street performance engine
Racing Head Service or Ford racingZheads are the best street/track usable heads in my opinion, you wont be as streetable going blue thunder, victor jr, canfield.
Ferrea Valves, Crane cams camshaft, lifters, rockers, vavle springs and retainers. Arp rocker studs 7/16
Ford Racing victor jr intake or C9OX stamped aluminum hirise intake or repro made by blue thunder auto
Speed Pro forged pistons and total seal or speed pro rings and get clevite engine bearings
There are a ton of cranks out there if your plannin on pullin over 340 hp i would recommend forged, I have seen one prominent crate builder using an iron crank on a motor with advertised 500 ft lbs torque which is idiotic imo, you can usually pick up some good h beam rods from summitracing.com for 500-600 same goes for forged crank.
ATI balancer, Hays Flywheel,
heck, go to easttennmotors.com and send me an email, im to tired to type it all right now.

I did send you an email. I started looking at a crank and rods. How do i decide what the stroke or journal size should be. and is the big end bore for the connecting rod the same as the journal size on the crank. What is the stock bore for a cylinder in a 351W. What are some other number i should keep in mind
