Default One wire alternators?

Anyone had any experience with converting to a one wire, internaly regulated alternator? The conversion sounds really easy but is it a good idea? Also, any preference as to brand of alternator?

I'm running a Powermaster 140a. just hook it up the way it says, and then what I did was tape off the wires individuallythat went to the factory alt, and unplugged the factory voltage regulator. Works great

It's an easy way to get a lot of amperage, and to get rid of a lot of old wiring.

Mine is a Powermaster. When you buy one, buy new. I went through two rebuilt ones before I got one to work. I put that one in the corner and stepped up 100amp new Powermaster, first one worked perfect, and still works....

The only thing you'll notice different with a 1 wire alternator is that it doesn't energize it's charging circuitry until it's revved to 2K rpms once. So after you start it..you have to 'kick it' once.

Self exciting is the term they use, but self exciting has absolulely nothing to do with the circuitry. Basically, self exciting has to do with the single wire bypass of the VR.
