Default question on a 351C

Well I bought a 1972 mustang convertable, it is in good shape but was sold without a running engine, they guy said that the motor is a 351C H.O. out of another car becasue the orginal one broke. I have pulled the plugs and ran a compression test and it has 160-167 psi on all cylinders so it seems healthy. Does anyone have a link or know where i can find engine #'s to identifiy the engine? Thanks Scott

What marking is on the corner of the head ? At each end of the cylinder head, just at the corners of the valve covers, you'll see a number 2 , a number 4, OR , God forbid... nothing at all. The 2 is a 2 barrel head , the 4 is a 4 barrel and the blank spot is indicative of a 351/400 head. Cross everything you've got and pray for 4's. With respect to the block, what's the casting number on the side of the block ? You'll typically find it cast onto the exterior surface behind the starter. Lastly, the VIN pad is on the top of the block facing the firewall. With the use of a mirror you'll be able to read the VIN of the original car the engine came from. That should also prove to be most helpful.

This info should get you a nice start on ID'ing the engine. Good luck, Dean
