68 Engine/tranny swap
Hi all. Well, my 289's time has come in my 68 coupe and I've been offered up a 390 + auto tranny
from my friends 64 T-Bird. Both in excellent running condition.
I've always wanted a big block but am frightened of doing a conversion. A member from another forum
was kind enough to give me a bit of advice. Not that I don't trust him but I would like to hear anyone elses experiences.
Here is what he said.
The 1964 390 used different engine mounts than the 65 and up (i beleive he said they are a 2 bolt and the later ones are 4 bolt.
I would also require an upgrade in my front suspension due to the increased weight of the heavier engine.
Lastly, he stated that my 8" rear would need to be changed in order to cope with the increased torque.
Once again, i'm not doubting his advice, just looking for other views on the swap. I am an amature
mechanic.
Any help/advice would be GREATLY appreciated.
Cheers

IMO, any swap is a lot more work that it appears on the surface, it's not the bigitems thatare a real issue, it is all of the small stuff. (Exhaust, linkages, mounts, fittings, etc.)
I am an advocate of swaps, and they generate a real sense of acomplishment when complete, but be prepared for a lot of little stuff to jump in your path.
The 8" rear will last just fine untill you really lean into the 390...... then it will just break without warning...

How about some good news such as "this is a seamless swap", "just as easy as changing your oil"
Oh well, I appreciate your enthusiasm for engine swaps. Thanks for your advice on the 8". I guess
I could take it one step at a time and change the rear end once i decide to increase the 390's HP.
Cheers

And, you can probably make that axle last for a long as you really want to.........

You can make any swap go better by educating yourselfto the greatest extent possible before buying parts etc. Get plenty of books, literature, and surf the web. Planning, planning, planning.....
Time and money factors kill lots of projects, but IMO, lack of motivation due to extended down time kill more projects than the other two combined.
Fantastic words of wisdom JMD. You're right on the money when you mention the reason for motivation drying up.
I will definately do as much prep work as possiblef as I love to learn things by reading and applying. Taking things in stages will keep my juices flowing
