Steering Box Rebuild- Who's done it themselves?
I palnned on just rebuilding the engine and trans, now everything is getting done. Anyhow, while everything is out, I thought I might as well rebuild the steering box. From what I've HEARD, it's fairly simple (the hardest part is getting it out- if the engine is in place). Soooo, who's done it? How was your experiance doing it? Any tips? Lastly, who sells a rebuild kit for these things.
It's for my 66 289 (AW box)
Thanks

About all you can do is replace the bearings for the input shaft with the parts available. I'm not sure that everything else can be done correctly with out some special tools. That's why shop that specialize in box rebuilds charge so much.

It can be easy - if you have the special tool to set the bearing and gear mesh loads, and the major internal components you have to re-use are not damaged, worn out or need machine work. This should give you some idea what is involved: http://www.stangerssite.com/steering_box.html
Excellent information. The site is incredibly informative. I never had an issue with excessive slop in the steering, but since everything is out, $130 is not a bad price to pay for peace of mind. Thanks again!
I just upgraded my steering from manual to power. I bought a kit that included the quicker ratio steering box from www.chockostang.com
I also strongly considered the Steeroids rack & pinion conversion. $1400 was a bit too much for me though. They're at http://www.automotivesteroids.com/Mu...Steeroids.html
What I learned: There's a set of wires coming out of your steering column. Unplug it at its connector. I pushed my column up into the car so I could paint the engine bay. When I did, I damaged a couple wires because they were stretched until they tore.

This is a case of "IF IT AIN'T BROKE DON'T FIX IT" The nut and bold work is simple-The correct adjustment is easy if you understan it and difficult if you dont. Get a good set of instructions and do it right.
