Default Not high rpming?

I just got my 65 mustang out on the road, when i bought it the 289 was seized up so i dropped a 302 down in it, and stayed with the C6 tranny, even thoi dont have a tachometer it seems like even when i stand on pedal it shifts at 3.5, i was wondering if that is normal for a C6 to be shifting early like that or if somethings up and how i would fix it if something isnt right, thanks for thoughts or ideas

are you sure you have the C6, and not the C4?

Yeah, your 65 came with a C4, and if you are stomping it, then 3.5K RPM is about right for changing gears.

3500 RPM sounds a bit low to me. Most stock 302/289's were 4500 rpm engines. But, without a tach, you have no clue as to the engine rpm with an auto.

The only thing you can really check would be the downshift rod connected to the tranny. Without it, the tranny will not down shift at full throttle, either.

From what the previous owner and my mechanic have told me its a C6 tranny, and another question comes with that, my car wont drop down into first *it will go into first in drive* but i cant start in first only second and drive, and when i talked to a mechanic about it, i was told that the linkage wont fit with a c6 tranny, is that true or what would i have to do to fix that?
