Default Coil location?

Where is the ideal or proper location to mount the coil on a 68 289?

Thanks Todd

Default RE: Coil location?

The normal coil position was on top of the intake manifold to the right of the carburetor. This applied to both 289 and 302 with or without options, power steering , A/C, smog, etc. There is a second location that gets used with a larger coil on the front of the right hand head but in this position, may have an interference fit with accessories. The left hand head is another location, but is non-stock.

You can move it off the engine to keep the coil cool as well. The stock location is decent, but the heat from the engine will shorten the life of the coil with a lot of use. Mine has been moved to the export brace in an air stream to keep it cool.
