Default new to mustangs speedometer probem

On my 66 6 cly 200automatic musang I have gone through 2 speedometers and 4 cables and 3 gears and still only got 8 miles on the last cable, I think the cable is run in the wrong spot on this old car, it comes off the trani, through a hole beside the gas pedal and windes up the dash and into the speedometer it seems to be bent to tight at the dash area would look to be better if the cable came in above the steeering column a more direct route but here is no hole there . does any one know which way is correct factory . thanks

thanks for the great picture that the way it runs so its some thing else, But I think I have mixed up gears when it strips the gear it shows it is not very far engaged, does the gears have diffrent sizesi need a bigger diameter speed o gear , my c4 seems to have a pink drive gear and the other going to the speedometer is a white gear , only replaced the white one because thats what was in there. What is the correct gear combination for a 66200 6 cyl with a c4 trani do not know the final ratio.

The stock gear for a 66 200 I6 C4 with a 3.20:1 rear axle and 6.95x14 tires (yah, sure) about 24 inch tires, is an 18 tooth yellow or gold Ford p/n C0DD-17271-B. The internal gear is fixed as it is part of a metal shaft.
