A C-4 is not a C-4. The ones used on six cylinder cars had different internals (as in not as strong) than a V-8. And the C-4 used on the HP was definately different. No matter if you re-use your old six cylinder one of get a V-8 type, you might as well get it rebuilt.

I have been reading that going on for many years now Jim, but so far nobody has proven me wrong. A C4 is a C4. Prove me wrong.

Just for reference,,, you don't want to pay more for a rebuild than you can buy a "new" one!!!

This doesn't prove you wrong Glen, but FWIW, the Cruise-O-Matic in the 6-cyl was about a $10 cheaper option than it was in the A & C code V8s. For '66, with the K code, the auto was about $31 more than that. Either they cost more to make (stronger?) or Ford was charging more for the same transmission.

I'll look in the service manualtomorrow if I get a chance (going to see the Dodgers lose again tonight).

The best proof is in the Ford Car Parts manual. Many, not all, part numbers for certain items inside the transmission of the same year's application are listed as six cylinder only and the same item for a V-8 has a different part number. Conclusion - it's seems to be obvious. Then you get to the PCW-BA type, used in the 289 HP equipped cars, you know, GT-350H, and even my 66GTKFB. I took my bow tie neighbor for a ride and he said he's 'never seen an automatic shift like that - ever' ('and stay together' - my words).

does the bell housing for the C4 in a '67 I6 need to be changed before a 351w is inserted? How does that process work? How difficult, cost??? etc?

That's a pretty weak case Jim. I'm still not convinced that the C4 behind a 6 is any different than a C4 behind a 289. Yeah, the manuals behind the C4 are weaker, I understand that, but the C4's? Nah.
