Center Link Removal???
Hey guys, I have all new manual steering parts for my 67 coupe. The only part I will be keeping is the piman arm as it looks to be in good condition. The rubber is still there between the pitman arm and the center link so I think it is ok, unles someone recomend replacing it anyway.
So, I have all the steering out with the exception of the idler arm center link and pitman arm. What I would like to know is what is the best way to separate the pitman arm from the center link. I have a pickle fork, but I think it will wind up destroying the rubber on the piman arm if I use it, so there must be another way. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks

Tradition dictates the use of the pickle fork. The prefered method is with the nut almost completly off, give a couple of solid whacks (a technical term) on the side of the center link, not the end of the tapered fitting, and all shall be well. Method 2 is to pound the turned upside-down nut on theend of the tapered fitting with some type of support on the center link.

Just throw the whole thing away and go with all new parts. You only get to do this once in your lifetime, so don't get chincy (technical term
] and try to save some 40 year old part just because the rubber appears to still be good. Get real. If you were a 40 year old rubber, how good would you be.

Thank you. However, the nut is on the threaded stud of the pitman arm that comes up through the center link. How can I bang on that, the pitman arm is not going to go anywhere. The center link must come up off the stud?????When I removed the controll arms I did the rap method, unthreading the nut but leaving it on and then rapping the spindle with a small sledge til it dropped of the ball joint. That worked like a charm. But here, the pitman will not drop out as it is fixed on the steering box. If I rap the center link will it free it?
Yeah, you are right soaring. But I was told that it was a non-wear item and not to replace it. But I am thinking thats the way to go. Only issue is they are like $130 bucks at advance auto and they have a core charge, which suprised me, of 100 bucks. So I will have to sep it anyway.
here you go link explaining how to whack the pieces http://www.mustangsplus.com/tech/sho...shockfall1.htm
