boring it does next to nothing for power only go as much as you have to to cleanup the cylinder walls.

It adds a little horsepower because you are increasing the cubic inch displacement slightly, but not enough to be noticed. You add horsepower by stroking the engine and either working over the heads or adding aftermarket heads.

I've often wondered if you actually do gain any power at all. Yes, you increase the cid but only very marginally, but you also have to go to a slightly heavier piston. I wouldn't be suprised if what little power you gain ends up getting lost to increased reciprocating weight. You also have more surface area on the pison sides and the ring, increasing the friction

Boring alone probably wouldn't do much assuming all else is stock, but with the right head/valve/cam combination boring can make a huge horsepower difference. I can't give you any numbers...I'm no engine builder, but I think this has been proven, go to your local race track and see how many racers have a stock bore motor.

I can tell you at least one thing that I know... (this may be the only thing I know on the subject). Increasing the bore helps with valve shrouding which occurs when the valve is too close to the cylinder wall and the amount of air that the valve should be letting in is limited cause not as much air can squeeze in between the valve and the cylinder wall. If the bore is larger more air can get into the cylinder. More displacement + more air = more power.

I found an article that was originally in National Dragster magazine on the subject of big bore vs long stroke engines which explains the benefits of bigger bore nicely

We've noticed.

A 0.040 inch bore also leads to overheating. Fact.

Go ahead - bore away. Got towing?
(I see dead Mustangs.
Why?
The owners 'cut' too much out of them.
So?
Invest in a towing company.)

I prefer the peace of mind from a smaller bore, which = thicker cylinder walls. Boring a block is nearly useless for power, mainly because you can't bore it enough for it to matter. The aftermarket nlocks are different though, some you can get with a .125 over bore, with room to grow, now THAT makes a difference
