thx for the replies guys. i checked the vin # and it is a 2v 289. i dont really care if it was hi-po or not cuz i am gonna either buy a 351 crate engine for it or completely rebuild the excistiing 1 with all performance mods. hell, i might even bore it out into a 302. there's an idea!

The 5th digit in the VIN tells you which motor is SUPPOSED to have. Seeing as the car is 40 years old, it could have anything in it by now.
If the 5th digit is:
C=2v 289. 200hp.
A=4v 289. 225 hp.
K=4v HiPo 289. 271 hp.
Don't have specs on the letter for the Shelby. But it is a K code engine (271hp 289) tweeked to get 306 hp.
But as stated in an eariler post, pull the starter and check the block there for what your motor actually is.
