Possible Mustang
Maybe we ought to explain about the floorpans. If the floorpan is rusted badly under the carpet that probably means that the cowl pans are rusted out and are leaking into the car.I would definatly check for this as mentioned above.Cowl pans are a very time consuming and expensive repair. The whole car has to basically be taken apart to even get to them to fix. There is another choice for repair called a cowl cover.Functional yes,but I have never liked the look of them on the car.
Hope this helps

You live in SoCal right? If the car is rusted and you can't get it for a steal I'd pass. There are many rustfree cars in CA. Take your time and shop around. I know how it is to get excited and buy on impulse.

Well Here is what the owner (Joe) said when my mom asked about it. It has the orignal engine which is a 302 and was rebuilt and has about 25,000 miles on it now. He says it runs great. He says the bottom corners of the doors have rust, but no where else. Mom asked him about the floorboards under the carpet and he said no. He is the second owner. According to him there is no bondo. The first owner redid the interior. So its got newer seats, carpet, and door panels. He says the brakes work fine. When asked if anything was missing. He says the only things are the chrome that goes around the radio and the centerpiece for the steering wheel. The odometer shows 77,000 miles. So that prob means the engine was rebuilt at around 150,000. Then when asked if anything is wrong. He said that the Drivers side regulator quit, and the back windows dont roll down. According to him it was appraised at $14,000 and hes asking $8000. Oh ya and I have driven past it and I saw that the trunk had faded from red to pink.
P.S. I found out that my dad would actually love for me to have a mustang that we could work on father-son, ut his only concern is where we would put it.

Except for the chrome around the radio, everything that is missing or out of action can be purchased and repaired. It sounds like a pretty good deal. I would have to drive it for several miles before passing judgement on it though. By the time you got everything fixed and repainted, you will have at least the 14,000 into it, and it would still have drum brakes and 14" tires.
having learned from my 68... dont be afraid to get dirty and crawl all over/under the car - the owner likely wont let you do much 'disassembly' but pulling up the rear seat cushion should let you pull the carpet back to see the floor pans back there. you may also be able to pull the rocker covers to check those out and get a glimpse under the carpet in front. take a flashlight w/ you to look at the firewall from under the dash, the cowl vents up through the vent door on the pax side and you can get an angle up through the drivers side underdash vent too. if theres new paint underneath, personally i'd be concerned it was just a quick coverup of a bigger problem - though it might be that the car got repaired and new paint to protect it...
its worth the money to get it to a reputable mechanic to test the engine as well as really go through the car, esp. if you haven't looked at a lot of classic mustangs yourself to know whats normal and what isn't. I thought I had a pretty good handle on what to look for ... but having owned mine and started digging through it / disassembling big parts of it to include changing from drums to discs I learned that I didnt really know what to look for The car is solid, fortunately, but not in as good of condition as I originally thought - got a good deal, but not the killer deal i originally thought (live and learn) .
good luck, hope its the car you've been looking for!

I'm with Soaring, see if you can test drive it a few miles first to see if it's what you really want. Also adding onto what Soaring said, you probably will have over $14k into by the time it's "done", that's how it went with my car. We were going to just put in new carpet and repaint it, but we ended up re-doing the entire interior, repainting it, replacing all the lights and emblems, etc...Good luck and I hope you end up getting it!
P.S. Auto or manual?
P.S. Auto or manual?
Oh sorry its automatic, i meant to put that in there. Plus I'd probably wait until my dad and his friend got back from Carlisle to check it out. Since I'm not sure what to look for, my dad has a pretty good take on what to look for, but his friend is a god at everything that has to do with cars. He would be the one who I'd ask to help us out.
I think I've got the solution for our space problem (the reason my dad won't let me get a mustang, supposedly), Our Cadillac has been acting up to where it stalls at random times (it's an automatic), so I suggest we trade it in, get another one, sell it,and I'll give him back the Jeep and I'll get the mustang.
you must have cool parents Celtic
a week ago they were taking the keys for the jeep away, now they're buying you a stang. For your mom???? Yeh right...i bet you put more miles on it the first time you get in than she does in the first month
