I have several pair, some are scared from being used to do some rather odd welding. One pair has friction tape to protect something from the teeth - I can remember what. To remove a busted bolt or stud, vice grips are the last thing to consider - NOT THE FIRST.
On that basis - you qualify for

there is a tool for every job, vise grips have their place

Vise Grips are the tool you use when you screwed up trying to use the right tool and nothing else works. Though there are times when they are nice to have, but I try to avoid using them like the plague, it'sa good way to make things worse sometimes
