Default Rerouting Header Tubes

I have a 68 coupe that I am in the process of getting everything buttoned up. With the resurrection of this coupe I decided to add lots of extra goodies: 347 stroker with 5 speed conversion, R&P, and hydraulic clutch. The r&p shaft interferes with the 1st tube of the driverside MAC LT header, and the second tube comes down to within 2mm of my hydraulic clutch slave cylinder. My question is how much would it cost to reroute this 2 tubes. I have to take my car to a muffler shop anyway, and figured that they should be able to tackle this job (Is this common for a muffler shop to do?) What really bites is that the headers are ceramic coated, so I am going to have to get the driver side header recoated. Thanks for the help

This not something your averge muffler shop should be trusted to do. You will want the tubes TIG welded, not MIG'ed. I would look for a hotrod type shop and see what they say. Pre bent mandral will be needed and the cost might a bit steep after parts and labor. I could see this being $300 or so after re-coating the header.

Can you "dimple" or dent the headers enough to clear these items? I know it sucks, but at least your coating would remain intact for the most part.

We had to do a little "modification" to the coated headers in my son's car, we had to do a little bit more than "dimpling" in a few spots, but the coating did not get hurt (much), and the fit is still good. We did bolt them to a set of heads while hammering to keep the flanges from bending.

Just 1 of many reasons I gave-up o headers on a daily driver street car. H-P 289 exhaust manifolds and 2/5" pipes and if I need more power I'll just put in a larger cam and rev it higher with a stiffer gear.

This epiphany only took 40 years.

JMD can you tell me about how much dimplingis OK? It's more of an opinion I know, but for me I would have to put about a 1inch diameter with about half an inch depression.

A half an inch depression will not be an issue as long as you are not too close to the flange (at the head).

We put about a 1/2" depression in a tube for better than three inches, no problem... they do not leak... We did this and a few other places, but not quite so much in the other spots.

Just make sure the top flange is securly bolted to a head before bending the tube. It will need to be a head not in a car.

Bend a little, test fit, bend a little, test fit, etc. etc.

andrew,
I already purchased my headers (MAC gt40p specific LTs ceramic coated for 250 bucks). The website you list has the p-specific headers but say they do not fit R&P systems. I think I am going to dimple/ bend the tubes as much as possible. Besides I figure if it is not enough I can just take it to the muffler shop an dhave them "fix" my problem. Thanks for the advice everyone.
