Default 289/302 dipstick location?

I've read several times about having to move the oil dipstick from it's original location and putting it somewhere in the front. Mine is currently sticking out on the left side of the engine just infront of the altenator. Is this the stock location? I know it may seem silly but I keep finding things that have been "modded" on my car that I never knew before.

Yes..that's the stock location for early models. Later on, the dipstick was moved to the driverside between 2 and 3 cylinder

FYI, you've got your left and right mixed up. With respect to cars, the left side is the driver's side (U.S. that is, i.e. left hand drive) and the right side is the passenger side. Cylinders 1-4 are on the right.
