Default RE: electronic ignition?

since ignition and carb was adjusted my car would always start without stepping on gas. but since I got a new distri and coil the engine is running more smooth and I can rev it up higher. contact breakers are useless for high revs. if the distributor is old, the humps working the contact breaker are uneven. So this way you'll never get a really good dwell. no matter how good the breakers are looking. As well the distributor shaft bearings are old, so the whole shaft will go back and forth-> totally unreliable ignition timing. So my personal opinion to this is: either get a remanufactured original distributor, which will be reliable and ok, or go for a HEI one, which is not original, but _far_ more accurate in timing.
pertronix have a coil and a HEI distributor seperate, which aren't original, but at least you don't have the ugly coil on top of the massive distributor then

ORIGINAL: 65StangFB

Be careful with the HEIs because they will not work on all manifolds. I originally purchased one to run on a high rise but it was too large (Diameter). I ended up upgrading to an electronic ignition and a MSD box. Very happy
Our HEI was "a little close" to the intake, RPM Air Gap, so I trimmed a little bit off of the bottom edge radius of the distributor, (rounded it off a bit), and a small amount from the manifold itself, and it fit real nice,,,

i have pertronix too, it took a day or two to tweak the settings just right, but it starts right up with no gas. and running that new ignition wire is some fun stuff. you can just pop off the instrument panel to bypass the fat pink resistance wire, rather than the whole dash. although in pulling the dash on accident, i was able to repair the connections to my dash speakers, and have sound in the front now!

Factory FoMoCo Dizzy II setup FTW.

Nothing fits like factory pieces. Any parts house in America will have the cure for anything that goes wrong. I have had mine in place on my 351w for over 15 years with nary a hickup. Get in, turn the key, and go!

A word of caution on the Pertronix setup. I had that setup in my old 64 Fairlane and on a Sunday afternoon, 20 miles east of absolutely nowhere, the car dies. Long story short, Pertronix system died! Just up and DIED! No parts houses anywhere local had the fix. I wound up slapping the points setup back in and getting home. If you do buy a Pertronix setup, buy 2. Just in case.

Keep it Ford!
