converting a 66 2bbl 289 to a 4bbl
ok I have a 289 2bbl V8, that i would like to restore to specs, but i had an idea. I know that the 289 4bbl V8 has a 10.0:1 CR as well as the four barel carb. Are these the only differences? Or does it have an entirely different valvetrain layout like the HO? Basicaly is it possible to turn my 2bbl into a 4bbl?
Same engine aside from the pistons, intake, and carb. All you need to do is pick up a 4V manifold and carb. For a mostly stock engine, I'd recommend an Edelbrock Performer (cangrind off thebrand name and paint blue to match factory if you want)and either an Edelbrock 500CFM or Autolite 4100 (1.08 venturi) carb.
I just completed the conversion and it was a no brainer. Get the manifold, swap out the old one and replace it, then get the 4bbl carb and bolt that on. Done! Ask if you need any help.
Definately feela difference. I remember seeing it in print somewhere that the swap will give you a 2 second drop in the quarter mile.
Use a stock Ford Intake manifold as the parts you have now will bolt up directly where they do on your 2 barrel intake manifold. If you use an aftermarket intake (granted they are LOTS lighter) you might have parts bolting up in different locations. Don't know for sure since I swapped on a stock manifold- someone who did the aluminum intake swap will have to answer that question.
Check out this link and if you do the swap I'd highly recommend doing it just like this - I use the same procedures and mine is perfect with no leaks. http://www.mustangsteve.com/intake.html
If you can find an Autolite 4100 carb that has the 1.08 venturi's (480 cfm) then I'd use that otherwise the 1.12 (600 cfm) would probably be too much cfm for your motor. Follow this link and read up on the performance difference. These guys at Pony Carbs know their stuff. http://ponycarburetors.com/default.a...amp;category=2
Make sure to search and read all the links on their page that you can find - take your time as there is very good info on their website about the 4100 carb.
They took my Autolite 4100 (1.12) and did the spreadbore conversion (made it a 1.00 venturi with plastic sleeves)on it. The carb sits on a stock289 motor with a stock Ford 4 barrel intake & Tri-Y headers. Run freakin' great!

More than I would pay but here is the complete setup...

the stock 4v intake is not a performance manifold, get an edelrock performer or better a wieand action plus and a 500-600 cfm carb, for a stocker a 500cfm edelrock carb is perfect or a 525 road demon. Dont worry about parts lining up the throttle linkage may need some adjustment thats about it.
You will pick up about 25-30 hp with that swap and 1-2 mpg's on the hwy, you can paint the manifold blue and put your stock air cleaner on if you want it stock looking.

Who mentioned valves? 4V stands for 4 Venturi, and 2V stands for 2 Venturi.
Changing a 302/289 to a 4-valve setup is as simple as swapping heads, actually. They are very expensive, but are worth while, from what I've seen. Don't know if the heads are still in production or not.

its about 25 hp difference with the 10.0:1 CR pistions. and its 4 barrel not 4 valve. 4 valve would take a lot of custom fabbing

http://www.araoengineering.com/ used to make the 4 valve heads, not anymore. Just 351c for fords and at 12K for the setup I doubt they're worth it.
