One thing I forgot to mention, on the original quarter we cleaned down to bare metal along the cut lines as well as the rosette welds along the wheel well and the door frame. Then we sprayed it with weld thru primer to prevent rust in the future.

We just welded spots until it was a solid seam. The main goal was to end up with a solid continuous piece of sheetmetal. We will add a thin layer of body filler to smooth out the surface from all of the grinding.
Yes, we ussed same method, but getting smooth surface from all of the grinding we used led insted of filler. Led or filler it does not make difference if all other work before that is done right as you have done.

Here you can see, that we used exactly same lines when we cut old part away.

Inside parts were painted black for maximum protection.

And then new parts were welded in small parts, but now I don“t find good picture from that.

And last but not least after grinding small amount of led and seam is at same palce as in your RGH69, but not visible anymore.

Painter did good job...

Actually very good job.

Great job KTM! Is there an advantage to lead? We have not done the filler yet. I have never done lead but then again I have only done a couple spots with filler. I am willing to learn if there is a specific advantage to lead.

Thanks RGH69!

About lead... It is period correct method to do body lines and fill body seams as we all have found in our cars. When this job is done correct way it is one best body filler and one main reason to use lead is fill posible tiny allmost microcopic size holes which may start rusting, but if you have not done it before you may just waist your time. Lead needs special liquid/paste before you can use lead and get it attached to body. Then this paste is heated and then lead must be heated enough that it will attach to body. That is very critical part and if you use wrong temperature all will be fall off.

Actually new metallic fillers are very good, but me or my friend are not familiar with that new stuff so we used method what we have learned to use. Talk with some local older body repair guru and ask what they like best and if he is willing to learn or show to you how lead is used.

I made on article in local car magazine about how to to these things and there is pictures of how to use lead. I will post some of those pictures later today.

Some hoiw to pictures....

Here is starting point. Grinded welding seams

1. Paste to the clean surface
2. Then heat paste so that it looks like clear metal
3. Now it is time to put enough lead to the fender
4. Seems like moon craters, but thats enogh material for final stage.

5. Here are tools for lead, so called lead spoons made of wood
6. Spoon is dipped in oil and now again you must heat lead, but not too much. If lead is too hot it will be in liquid form and you have start all over again. This is the stage when you do forms which are wanted
7. Now it allmost deasent as we all can see.
8. Last stage is to file lead in to the final form. You must use specil file and sorry I don“t know this file name in English.

Anyway here are basic steps "how to use lead".

Wow, looks like it requires more skill and processes than I have. I suppose like anything else the more involved it is the better the outcome. I can see how it is superior to filler since filler is porous. Especially on a butt-weld since there may be small holes through the bacside that can wick through to the filler. However, I don't think I have the skill or patience for lead. Thanks for the step-by-step pics!
