Default switching to the other side...

Yes, sadly, I cannot control my urge for more power. I have decided to swap to a V8. Not immediately, but I'm going to start getting all my parts together and rebuilds and all that.

What is a good estimate of the total swap? Steering, suspension, rear end, engine (duh), transmission, and all those other lovely things that go with it (like radiator, mounts, etc.).

I would like to hit around 325 hp. I know a 289 can do it (I think...)

Price will depend on how much used (stock)stuff you want to use, the level of build you are looking for, and how much of your own work you want to do.

I think you could do a nice job for $6,000 to "the sky's the limit".

Rear axle $500 to $2,000
Drive line $120
Transmission $500 to $2,300
Clutch and bell housing/block plate $300 to $700
Clutch linkage / cable $100 to $300
Rebuilt / Performance Engine $2,000 to $10,000 or much more
V-8 Spindles and front end parts $500
Front disk brakes $350 to $1,200
Rear Disk brakes $200 to $750
Front springs $150
Rear Springs $120 to $200
Engine Fan $100 to $300
Pulleys, brackets, alternator, water pump, etc. $200 to $700, (nothing really "trick")
Radiator $200 to $600
Motor mounts $160
Wheels and tires $500 to ???? whatever

Ok, what did I miss? I know I missed something....

woo hoo...just got me a 289 and trans for $300. The trans has the torque converter, but is missing the flexplate? he thinks.

Is that a good deal? I'm told the engine looks really good on the insides. He also has a stock 4 bbl manifold he's giving me for $75. Not sure if that is a good deal either.

Now, assuming I go and get it and it doesn't look good, I probably will back out of the deal. But, if it all looks good, I will probably do a rebuild on it. Maybe hone it out and put new pistons in. I assume that will probably run...eh, $300?

Let me know how I did

Wow you are gettin right down to bizniss. I like it!

I checked out a few of your pics on the picassa link you have. Nice car! I am sure you are going to really enjoy the projects ahead of you. You are a braver man than I am. I bought mine with most of the dirty work done. But I did get a pretty good deal. I just dont have the time and space to work on a project car very much. Like my quote says on my profile... "I just want to drive, thats all."

Good luck with everything!

+1 on that. It's my daily driver, for now, so you know how difficult it is to get things done.
Thanks

Your original post siad you want about 325HP. You will have to a fair bit more than a hone and new pistons. Get the motor, and build it up over time, while getting the car ready to accept it.

yea, that's the goal. Maybe I won't get to 325. To be honest, I've never driven a 289, so I don't know what it's going to feel like. But my 6 is getting less and less powerful as the days go on.

Still no answer though, does anyone think that's a good deal? thanks,

$300 for a block and trans is a good deal, IMO even if it doesnt run, youll want to rebuild it anyway
