68 Mustang Preference
Need some help in deciding which way to go with the paint on my 1968 Mustang GT 302. It was originally Wimbledon White (drab, drab, drab), with black interior and black vinyl top. The car came with drum brakes and manual steering and has been upgradedwith power steering and frontpower disk brakes. I am debating making it black on black on black. It also came with optional AC package. The manifold and carburator is now Eldebrock and Holley 4-barrel. What color combination of the two would bring the highest dollar at auction with all things considered??? Planning on selling next year. Any suggestions would be most helpful.

In this case, I dont think the color would matter much. It is simply a matter of appealing to the right buyer to get your desired asking price.
Personally I think black/black is a safe bet.
BUT if top dollar is your biggest concern, you should to stick with the wimbledon white (even though you dont like it much---remember you are not doing this car for you...which is usually a bad idea, btw)... The collectors with the most $$$ usually want as close to original as possible.
I think if you stick with the original color, regardless of your feelings about the color, you will get a higher price. I think the vinyl top is optional since I assume that it is long gone by now. It can always be added later and a lot of people will be hesitant about it since they cannot tell the condition of the metal under the vinyl. If they were trying to restore it to concours, it would not be an expensive job to add the vinyl top.
Could you post some pics of the car?

Awesome car you have!! Thank you for your input. The car actually came to me with the vinyl top. I am replacing the top with a new vinyl top but will also take pics of the underlying metal before doing so. Deep in my heart I knew the white would be the way to go to keep it as close to original as possible...guess I needed confirmation.
You want to see the pics BEFORE it is done? It is at the post-priming stage. Working on a 47 Chevrolet Fleetmaster right now so now that I am most likely going to do the Mustang white, I will not be working in concert with the 47 (which is black).
Thanks again for your valuable input.

Hey Arlyn~
Thanks for the kudos to my car. It is a work in progress but it is a lot of fun. It is a 68, but far from original. The original vinyl top is long gone and I don't think I will be replacing it. The original color was some sort of beige. But the thing is, my car is a total restomod. It sounds to me like your car is reasonably close to original. So it seems like the best bet would be to try to keep it close to original. It's hard for me to say for sure though, without seeing the condition of the car now. Do you have anyone close to you that you can consult with for advice?
It may be that if it is more economically sensible to paint both cars black at the same time, you could do that. I do know that a black/black classic Mustang is a beautiful thing. Someone else on here was posting pictures a day or two ago of a beautiful 68 coupe they are thinking of buying. I want that car!!! Here is the link to that thread:

That is cool that you are sticking with the vinyl top. But yes, it is a good idea to document the condition of the metal underneath the vinyl so the prospective buyers can see that it is in good condition. I am not a body expert but I assume that it would be best to just paint the entire roof and clearcoat the whole thing before adding the vinyl top. Is that what you are planning on doing?
Its up to you on whether you want to post pics of the car in its current state. Some people might be able to offer better advice after seeing what the car looks like now. Plus, its always fun to see someone else's car!!!
Sounds like you have a lot of fun projects going on. My 68 is my first and I love it!

Are you sure its a GT? Im pretty sure they only came with factory front disks.
BPacheco... Be sure to decode your VIN# and door codes. It is possible that it is in fact a GT and the original features of the car have been lost in translation over the years. I am assuming that you recently acquired the Mustang... Perhaps it just has newer disc brakes on it now instead of the older originals.
Decode your digits here if you have not done it already:
