Default Spark Curve

I need some advice.
Is there a rule of thumb as to how fast I want my distributor to advance the mechanical curve for different driving conditions? Do I want, say, quick advance for low to mid range power ( street driving) or the other way around. I'm running a Pertronix II billet dist with 3 different choices on the springs (fast, medium amd delayed) and 3 choices on advance limiters. The 289 is stock internals (for now) with EDL RPM manifold, Holly 4160 and tri-y headers. Just looking to tune it for a little better low to mid throttle response. Not looking to go drag racing.

Thanks in advance...

Some people go by as much advance as rapidly as the engine will tolerate without it pinging, losing power or being too excessive

Most SBF's like a steep mechanical advance curve, usually 30-34* totalall in by 2800 or so.
