Default Dizzy Question

what distributor should i get for my 67 289. Everything that i am finding is either a steel gear or a points distributor. I would like to go HEI . I can't spend $400 for a msd one either. Can the gear off of a steel distributor be replaced to work with my iron cam gear I still have my old distributor, it isn't in good shape but the gear looks ok.

I am a big fan of the HEI Distributors, they will work great and are more than adequate unless you are doing some serious racing. They are very reliable, relatively cheap to buy, and are very cheap to maintain should you have a failure. Repair parts are available (and in stock) in virtually every parts store in America.

This one has a cast iron gear already....

I don't really see a problem with the stock unit. With an electronic ignition upgrade and an advance recurve it'll work just fine.

That said, I have an MSD ready-to-run and 45kV coil in my 331 and I love it. It comes with everything you need to change the advance curve to pretty much whatever you need, and it's easy to add a box later if you want.

Spend a $100 and get the Pertronix conversion unit. I had mine installed in about 30 minutes. You will have to eliminate your pink resistor wire from your ignition and run a 12V wire to reliably power it. You won't regret it. Your car will idle and start better. Most performance auto parts stores will carry these.

The standard Pertronix does not require the resistor bypass, it will run fine on 8V. The Pertronix IIunit, however, does require a full 12V to function properly
