Default Antifreeze Leaks

Hi, Im having a little situation. I drove my 1967 mustang s-code for like an hour last night just to test everything because I just bought the car. I left the car on and checked on the botttom for any leaks but I saw nothing. The temperature was normal and everything. After I decided to park the car and i turned it off it started leaking antifreeze like crazy from the reserve. I would say it leaked around one galloon. I had flushed the radiator and I changed the cap as well. I had also added a reserve just in case . I would like to know what can this be. Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Jose...

Not sure what year Stang you have, but the early model cars don't like having their radiators filled to the top. If you fill it to the cap, it will puke out what it doesn't like...which usually ends up at a level just above the core. It'll look like it's 2" low when viewed from the cap.

Now that it's puked out the fluid, run it and see what it does. see if it gets hot, and see if the fluid stays at the level it seeked out.

Yea, James is correct. don't over fil the overflow. But since you flushed and refilled the system, if you didn't let it get to operating temp, the rad didn't burp the air out the system. Air in the system will cause a terriffic burp on shut down due to the expansion of the steam.

early cars are known for collecting air in the heater core, that's why it's a wise idea to turn on your heater when flushing the radiator. The cooling system probably "burped" as mentioned, spewing fluid. Now that it's cleared the air internally, I'd go back and check the systemjust to make sure your didn't puke too much fluid.a stock 2 core radiator doesn't hold a heck of a lot of fluid, so a gal of fluid might be a concern, and might require a little top-off.
