need help with speedometer cable
I have '65 Mustang. While replacing the ignition switch, I removed the speedometer cable which went without a hitch. I can't seem to get it back on. My cable has a nut that screws on to the gauge. It just doesn't quite want to reach the threads no matter how hard I push. Anyone have this problem? Any recommendations?
I haven't personally, but I've heard crazier stories. I'm sure you've probably tried this, but maybe twist the thing a little bit. The only thing I can think of is maybe thesquare inner cable inside the housing is actually not lining up with the speedo. Either that or maybe there is something wrong with the threads. Check to make sure nothing is lodged inside the end of the speedo cable.
There seems to be a small round collar about an inch or so back from the square end of the cable. When I insert the cable into the speedo, this collar buts against the speedo entrance. Is it suppose to go into it? Because it seems the nut gets just to the threads, but I can't get it to catch. I'll try the things you suggested smitty, another option I guess is to replace the cable, although I suspect I'm not getting something right.
I mean absolutely no offense by this...but are you sure you're turning the nut the correct direction? I sat at mine cursingfor a good 20min whileturning it the wrong direction because I was working at it from the front of the unit instead of the rear. Felt just a little stupid afterwards...
I've found it a bit easier to get the cable into the back of the speedo if you pull the other end out of the tranny. That way, it is free to spin or you can manually twist the cable to get the 'spline' to line up with the speedo. Also, make certain that the cable is going straight into the speedo. Due to the bend in the cable it naturally wants to pull down and towards the center of the car.
Good luck,
Jeff

I've had two 66 coupes and have never had trouble with a lack of slack in the cable. Granted there's not a whole lot of room to get it on, especially if you have large hands, but there is enough slack to screw it on without having to reack under the dash.
As far as the little collar goes, yes, I believe it goes into the housing a little bit. I never even thought about turning the cable the other way... haha. Wouldn't that suck!
