Default 351 W in 67 Mustang

Ok so I found acheap 351 W I am going to put in the car. Is there any way I can tell what year it is so that I can buy correct parts i.e. casting number? I am having my machinist go through it and help it out..cam head job ect. I also was wondering about headers? Will 302 stuff interchange? Newbie! here.

What parts are you trying to buy? The internals didn't change through the years, except the cam, but you're not puttinga stocker back in anyway.

The 302 headers will bolt up, but they won't exit the engine bay properly.

I guess what I m most concerned about is motor mounts. Someone had put a 302 in the car. So there are motor mounts set up for a V-8, I am learning that the 351W seems to be the same block only 9' taler? That heads from a 351 will fit the 289 & 302? The intake has more bolts? Starter? Water pump? Do the make headers for this application? Maybe form a 68? I am weighing the idea of this over searching for a302/289 instead, I am just concerned that it will require alot of headaches? Thanks for the advice!

the mounts are the same, you can even use your 289 flexplate, starter water pump, pulleys and accesories and brackets with a little modification.

The alternator bracket setup is different between the 289/302 and the 351W. You will need an "alternator tree" to locate the top alternator bolt.

I used stock 1967 motor mounts and the fit is just fine. I can run a factory aircleaner and I have no clearance issues with the hood. It is close, but it does clear.

The difference in height I don't believe is anywhere near 9" between the two sizes. The deck on the 351 is 1 inch taller than the 302 so I really wouldn't worry about clearance unless you are going to run a highrise intake. I run a Edlebrock Performer RPM with a 650 dblpump.

I used 1969 and earlierbrackets and pulleys for my swap. The waterpump outlets are the same as the earlier years so it retains a more original look. The pulleys, brackets and waterpumps changed quite a bit after 69. So, whatever year you decide to model after, get matching parts, (brackets, pulleys etc.) because trying to mix the two styles doesn't work worth a toot.
